Nail Length and Shape
When it comes to figuring out the best length for your nails, it is entirely up to you. However, keep in mind that nails that are too long are more likely to split or tear. On the other hand, nails that are too short may not effectively protect your fingertips. Ideally, two to three millimeters beyond your fingertips is the ideal length with natural shape between round and square.
Think of cuticles as the protection of your nails. When cuticles are healthy, you nails will be just as healthy. What are cuticles, you ask? Cuticles are the thin and flexible skin around the bottom of your nail beds. It protects the part of your nails that stimulate new cell and nail growth. Rather than risk tearing the skin by cutting the cuticles, it is best to apply a cuticle oil or cream and push them back.
Apply a drop of cuticle oil on the base of each nail and gently rub the oil in. Next, using an orange stick, gently push back the cuticles surrounding the nail to get the oil under the cuticles. This method protects and moisturize your cuticles and nails, decreasing the risk of skin infection commonly associated with cuticle cutting.
Moisturize and SPF
Consistently moisturizing is key to keeping your hands supple and firm. Sun damage can cause dark spots and wrinkles, therefore it is important to keep your hands protected and moisturize everyday. Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before going outdoors and reapply as needed to prevent sun damage. Forming a consistent routine is key to improve the condition of your hands.
Don’t forget to wear gloves when doing chores. Gloves offer two great benefits: protection and prevention; they protect your skin from exposure to the chemicals found in some cleaning products. Water, especially hot water, can strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving your hands and nails dry and chapped. Remembering to wear a pair of cotton-lined rubber gloves while you clean minimizes your contact with both water and chemicals keeping your protected while you work.
