Jin' Story

1990

I came to New York City with $400 I borrowed from my sister and immediately started working at Korean-owned nail salons.

1996

Known as “bicycle Jin,” I rode my bike to clients’ apartments providing in-home mani/pedi with my tools in a backpack.

1997

One of my clients, a magazine beauty director who loved my work, introduced me to an agency and I began working on editorial and advertising campaigns.

1999

Opened my first boutique nail spa in the East Village neighborhood of NYC, which is how I met my future husband John, the architect who designed all four of my spas.

1999

My meticulous work was recognized by people in the beauty industry which expanded my career into advertising work for Revlon, Cover Girl, L'Oreal, Maybelline, Sally Hansen, Mac and Sephora.

2000

My nail art was featured in a seven-page spread in the New York Times Magazine; the first time they ran such a story, which put me on the map as a nail artist.

2001

Buoyed by the success of my first salon, I opened a second, this time in the West Village and double the size of the East Village.

2002

Began working with the legendary fashion photographer Hiro, for Harper’s Bazaar.

2005

My first time ever working with the legendary fashion photographer Steven Meisel for an Escada campaign, and became a member of his team, which catapulted me from beauty to high fashion. I became recognized by the media and models as the Steven Meisel-approved editorial manicurist.

2005

Ventured to the Upper East Side to open my third and most dramatic salon so far, which was featured in Interior Design Magazine.

2006

Started working with the one and only Irving Penn for Vogue Magazine. It was an honor to work with him in my lifetime!

2008

Met Marc Jacobs on a shoot for a Frances Nars book project, and continue to work with him on Louis Vuitton campaigns and his runway shows to this day. Marc is also a regular at my flagship salon and he loves getting mani/pedis.

2009

Partnered with MAC Cosmetics to create six exclusive fashion-forward colors for FW2009.    This collaboration bolstered my interest in creating nail polish shades.

2012

Launched my eponymous line of    JINsoon Nail Lacquer line shades, which included The Quintessential Collection (6 classic shades of reds and nudes) and the A La Mode Collection (6 trend-based shades named by fashion models).

2013

I teamed up with Tibi designer Amy Smilovic for my first collaboration with a fashion brand, launching six colors that embodied utilitarian chic: edgy, but still sophisticated.

2016

Opened the JINsoon flagship salon in Tribeca, my largest salon/event space located in the heart of Tribeca with an art gallery-like feel.

2017

My ten-year anniversary of working on the covers of Italian Vogue, having done so with Steven Meisel since 2007.

2021

Participated in Michael Kors 40th Anniversary Collection Runway event which was held in New York City's Theatre District, a location that is near and dear to Michael Kors heart.
